There are six standard types of network marketing compensation plans: unilevel, binary, matrix, board, generation (stair-step breakaway), and hybrid. Hybrid plans currently dominate new launches.
Quick reference on network marketing types
- Unilevel — unlimited frontline width, fixed depth, monthly payouts.
- Binary — two legs, weaker-leg payout, weekly cycles.
- Matrix — fixed grid (e. g., 3×9), spillover, cycle bonuses.
- Board — fixed boards cycle when complete, paying lump-sum bonuses.
- Generation/Stair-step breakaway — pays through leadership generations rather than fixed levels.
- Hybrid — combines two of the above (most often binary + unilevel).
Definition: Network marketing plan types categorize MLM compensation structures by network shape and commission flow. Most active companies fit into one of six types or use a hybrid combining two. The type chosen at launch shapes every operational decision: software complexity, distributor training, retention strategy, and regulatory risk profile.
Selecting a type of network marketing plan is the highest-leverage decision in launching an MLM. Companies that test multiple plan types in simulation before launch outperform those that copy competitors blindly.
