How Does Multi Level Marketing Work?

How does multi level marketing work? Multi level marketing works by distributing products through a network of independent representatives. Each representative earns commissions from their own sales and receives a percentage of the sales made by the distributors they recruit, creating a multi-level income structure. The company produces the product and handles logistics. Distributors handle the selling, customer relationships, and team building.
The MLM Revenue Flow
When you join an MLM company, you typically purchase a starter kit or product package. From there, you sell products to customers and earn a retail commission: usually between 20% and 50% depending on the company.
At the same time, you recruit other distributors. When they sell products, you earn a percentage of their sales. This is the "multi-level" part: commissions are paid across several levels of the organization.
A typical flow looks like this:
- You join and buy a starter package
- You sell products and earn retail commissions
- You recruit distributors who also sell products
- You earn override commissions on your team's sales volume
- Your recruits recruit others, extending the network deeper
The compensation plan determines how many levels deep you earn, what percentages apply at each level, and what bonuses are available for reaching performance targets.
Definition: Multi level marketing operates by paying distributors on their own sales, plus commissions on whatever their downline sells across multiple levels of the organization.
MLM works through a simple mechanism: sell products, build a team, earn from both. The model is sustainable when the majority of revenue comes from actual product sales to end consumers, not from distributor purchases or recruitment fees.
