How to organize the work of a team in an MLM company

In network marketing, the productivity of each partner directly influences the effectiveness of the entire structure and the company's development speed. Therefore, the interaction among team members, their mutual support, and their ability to work as a unified mechanism are crucial factors for success in the MLM business. But how can you build a cohesive team of distributors?

What is a Team in Network Business?

A team is a group of people united by a common goal of promoting a company's products or services, who share its core values, and bear collective responsibility for the work's outcome. 

In MLM business, where the main idea is to build a broad network of distributors, the team becomes the foundation of everything. Here, the organizational culture influences teamwork, but the MLM leader of each specific team is responsible for fostering team spirit and coordinating work.

Teamwork is a powerful tool for achieving the goals of an MLM company and, among other things, for the personal and professional growth of each individual distributor. This format of work is very important for network business because:

  • A team is much more productive. Collaborative work of even three people yields more results than the effort of a single employee. When members work together seamlessly, they can better utilize their individual skills and knowledge, achieving common goals significantly faster.

  • Teamwork helps in deeper problem understanding. Constant discussion, brainstorming, and experience sharing help to examine a task from different angles and solve it faster.

  • Motivation and support. Teamwork creates an environment where participants can support each other, exchange experience and knowledge. Such support helps overcome difficulties and maintain distributor motivation at a high level.

According to Gallup research, organizations with a high level of team cohesion receive 21% more profit than companies where teamwork is less developed. Moreover, the ability to work in a team ranks first among soft skills in the list of employer requirements.

Characteristics of an Effective MLM Team 

To better understand what an effective team in network business should be like, let's describe its main features:

  • Synergy. The essence of the synergy effect in teams is that its members complement each other — the strengths of some compensate for the weaknesses of others.

  • Well-defined positioning and rules. Each team member should know the strategic goals of the MLM company, the rules for making decisions, and interacting with other partners.

  • Presence of a leader. A strong MLM leader equals a strong team. Therefore, they must constantly self-develop and not be afraid to take responsibility for the effectiveness of their entire structure.

  • Small number of people. The partner structure of each MLM company consists of many small groups. The size of effective teams usually ranges from 3 to 15 people; small groups (up to 5 people) are more flexible, while larger ones (12-15 people) have more resources at their disposal.

  • Autonomy. Each team of distributors is an autonomous unit within the overall partner structure of the MLM company. However, their interaction with project founders or other company partners, for example, within the framework of experience exchange, is not excluded.

How to Build an Effective Team in MLM Business

Properly setting up teamwork is one of the main tasks in successful network business management. To build a productive and cohesive team of distributors:

1. Set Clear Goals and Achieve Them Together

By having clear, transparent, and agreed-upon goals, distributors will understand what is expected of them and what they need to work on. Sometimes, when planning the work vector, you can take a reasonable risk: set challenging tasks for the team, but maneuver between ambition and achievability.

For example, if your landing page gets 30,000 users per month, an inflated goal would be to get 50,000 visitors — this is significant growth, but the task is realistic.

If your partners didn't achieve a deliberately ambitious goal, it doesn't mean the task failed — discuss with the team why you didn't succeed and learn from it.

2. Be as Open as Possible to Communication

All communication with partners should be as open, honest, and respectful as possible. There should be an atmosphere of psychological safety within the team — your people should be confident that they will be heard and supported when needed. Make it clear that they can make mistakes, take risks, and ask any questions related to the MLM company's work, sales, and recruiting.

3. Focus on Continuous Improvement

A team is capable of continuously self-reflecting, improving processes, and increasing the effectiveness of interaction with each other. Openly discuss norms, goals, obstacles, and nuances that will help them progress and achieve greater results.

You can introduce a rule for weekly calls, during which each of your partners will talk about their achievements, problems encountered, evaluate personal progress, and discuss further plans with the team. This is a quality example of effective interaction and support.

4. Develop Team Creativity

When people invest their creative energy into their work, they begin to consider the project as something personal, something they own. Encourage your team to think, generate non-standard and innovative ideas, voice their perspectives and views on potential problem solutions. By developing partners' creativity, you increase their involvement in the business, learn to value colleagues' experience, and expand your own skills and knowledge.

5. Value the Uniqueness of Each Team Member

In fact, the more diverse your team members are, the better. Value the uniqueness, differing viewpoints, knowledge, and opinions of each partner. The ultimate goal of team cohesion is to learn how to use the individual strengths of your people in their work, leverage their strongest sides, and achieve that very synergy effect.

P.S.: Even in a cohesive team, healthy conflicts happen. This is inevitable when people work together and learn from each other. They may disagree on a particular idea but arrive at constructive dialogue and compromise.

6. Introduce Shared Traditions

To ensure team members regularly interact with each other, it's important to create corporate traditions. By involving employees in the formation of both formal and informal customs, you'll create a cozy, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere.

These could be Monday morning meetings, shared lunches, or even weekend bowling outings. 

7. Celebrate Team Successes

Celebrating success, even the most insignificant, is a crucial step in building effective teams. The celebration doesn't have to be grand or flashy; the main goal is to show people that they are valued and play a significant role in the company.

The time you invest in building relationships within your distributor team will pay off very quickly, exponentially. A cohesive team not only increases work efficiency but also creates an atmosphere where each member feels valued and understands that their efforts are very important. This motivates people to engage in active sales and recruiting, which, in turn, contributes to the sustainable growth of your network business.
