Network Marketing in Turkey
Turkey, which combines eastern charm and European values, has every chance of becoming one of the leading centers for network marketing industry development. But what contributes to the prosperity of MLM business in Turkey now, and what aspects should be considered for a successful entry into this market?
What is the economy of Turkey like
Turkey is a country with a mixed economy that continues to grow steadily despite high inflation, volatility of the national currency, and other factors. Its economy currently ranks 18th in the world and 8th in Europe in terms of nominal GDP.
According to the International Monetary Fund, in early April 2024, Turkey's GDP reached $1.1 trillion, and GDP per capita was $12,765. It is expected that the country's GDP will grow by 3.5% in 2025 and by 4% in 2026.
One of the most important advantages for business development in Turkey is its geographical location. The country is located at the intersection of Europe and Asia, allowing entrepreneurs to easily expand into the markets of the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, and Europe. Additionally, the country's population is currently around 87.5 million people, with over 20% of Turks looking for ways to increase their income. This contributes to actively attracting partners in MLM business in Turkey, which offers unlimited earning potential.
Features of network marketing in Turkey
Research on the Turkish market conducted by Nielsen organization indicates a high potential for the development of multi-level marketing in the country. For example, 43% of local residents are aware of network marketing, and 31% of them have a very good understanding of how this sector works. At the same time, there is still 57% of the audience that could potentially be engaged in the MLM industry.
According to the WFDSA report, the total sales volume in the direct selling and network marketing market in Turkey has already exceeded $512 million. MLM companies have over 1.3 million residents of the country working as distributors, among whom 75% are women.
To succeed in promoting network marketing in Turkey, it is necessary to deeply understand their cultural peculiarities, business customs, and the etiquette they attach great importance to. This nation combines everything - both East and West, Europe and Asia. Turks are friendly, responsive, and polite, and if you learn even a few words in Turkish, it will literally disarm them. Respect and trust are of particular importance to local networkers, as even the slightest hint of distrust towards them will make a Turk ready to turn down a very lucrative offer.
In Turkey, friendship is valued, and they are willing to go to great lengths for their loved ones. Given their friendliness, establishing close communication with local partners is quite simple. However, do not abuse this quality, as even minor work disputes can ruin the relationship with a Turk. Moreover, they do not tolerate pressure and criticism, especially from foreigners.
Legality of Network Marketing in Turkey
Network marketing is a completely legal business model in Turkey. Since 1994, the Direct Selling Association (DSA) of Turkey has been operating here, bringing together local and international companies. The association represents the interests of network companies, establishes ethical business conduct rules and customer service standards that all market participants must adhere to.
Despite the lack of specific laws regarding MLM business in Turkish legislation, all network companies in the country must adhere to general business conduct rules and the "Consumer Protection Law." This law includes provisions on "Off-Premises Contracts," which also describe the rules for direct sales. All MLM companies in the country must also obtain a license from the provincial institutions of the Ministry of Trade.
Many MLM companies operating in Turkey have long been following EU directives and do not face any legal issues. Therefore, we recommend organizing MLM projects in the Turkish market in line with European standards and rules.
The Turkish government is also striving to eradicate financial pyramids by strengthening regulations on such schemes, particularly through new laws aimed at protecting investors and consumers from fraudulent financial operations. Local media outlets provide information on criminal investigations related to financial pyramids like Quest.net and Erol Marketing.
We wrote about the differences between legitimate MLM companies and pyramids in the article Network Marketing vs Financial Pyramids.
