# Why Pyramid Schemes Don't Work?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Why pyramid schemes don’t work is a question with a simple answer: math. Pyramid schemes require each level to recruit more people than the level above. This creates exponential growth that is impossible to sustain. Every pyramid scheme reaches a point where there are not enough new recruits to pay existing participants, and the entire structure collapses.

**The Numbers**

If each person recruits just 6 people, by level 13 you would need more than 13 billion participants — almost twice the world’s population. No market is large enough to sustain this growth, which means every pyramid scheme is mathematically destined to fail.

The people at the bottom pay in but cannot recover their money because there is no one left to recruit. The scheme works only for those who join very early, which is a tiny fraction of all participants.

**Definition:** Pyramid schemes don’t work because they require infinite exponential growth in recruitment, which is mathematically impossible. They always collapse, leaving the vast majority of participants with financial losses.

There is no “smart” way to make a pyramid scheme work. The structure itself guarantees failure for most participants.
