# Why Network Marketing Is Bad?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Why network marketing is bad is a question that usually comes from people who have had negative experiences with MLM companies or have seen others lose money. The criticism is not always about the business model itself — it is about how some companies and distributors operate within it.

**Legitimate Criticisms**

* Most participants earn very little. Income disclosure statements from major MLM companies consistently show that the majority of distributors earn less than minimum wage or lose money after expenses.
* Pressure to recruit over selling. Some companies incentivize recruitment more than product sales, pushing distributors toward pyramid scheme behavior.
* Damaged relationships. When distributors aggressively pitch friends and family, it strains personal connections.
* Misleading income claims. Some distributors exaggerate their earnings to recruit new members.

Is network marketing inherently bad? Not necessarily. The model itself is a legal and established way to distribute products. The problems arise when companies design compensation plans that reward recruitment over sales, or when distributors make promises the business cannot deliver.

**Definition:** Network marketing receives criticism because most participants earn little or no income, some companies prioritize recruitment over sales, and aggressive tactics can damage personal relationships.

The business model is not the issue — the execution is. A well-run network marketing company with a real product and a fair compensation plan can be a legitimate business opportunity.
