# Why MLMs Are Pyramid Schemes?

Why MLMs are pyramid schemes according to critics? Critics argue that many MLMs are functionally pyramid schemes because the majority of revenue comes from distributors purchasing products themselves — not from sales to outside customers. When most of the money in the system flows from participants to the company, and earnings are concentrated at the top of the hierarchy, the structure mirrors a pyramid scheme regardless of whether a product exists.

**The Argument**

The core argument that MLMs are pyramid schemes rests on several points:

* **Income concentration.** Official income disclosure statements show that a small percentage of top-tier distributors earn the vast majority of commissions. Most participants earn nothing or lose money.
* **Internal consumption.** In many MLM companies, distributors are the primary buyers of the product. If the product is not being sold to outside customers at a meaningful rate, the revenue is essentially coming from participants — which is the defining feature of a pyramid scheme.
* **Recruitment dependency.** In practice, it is nearly impossible to earn significant income in most MLMs without recruiting a large team. This makes recruitment — not product sales — the primary income driver.
* **FTC guidelines.** The FTC has stated that if an MLM company's revenue is primarily derived from internal consumption rather than retail sales to non-participants, it may be operating as a pyramid scheme.

Counter-argument: legitimate MLM companies do generate real retail sales to outside customers, and the existence of a genuine product with market demand separates them from pure pyramid schemes.

**Definition:** Critics call MLMs pyramid schemes because income is concentrated at the top, revenue often comes from distributor purchases rather than outside customer sales, and success depends heavily on recruitment.

The debate is not black and white. Some MLMs operate legitimately with strong retail sales. Others function as pyramid schemes with a product attached. Evaluate each company individually based on where its revenue actually comes from.
