# Why Do Pyramid Schemes Fail?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Why do pyramid schemes fail? Pyramid schemes fail because they require an infinite number of new recruits to sustain payouts, and that is mathematically impossible. Every pyramid scheme ever created has either collapsed on its own or been shut down by regulators. There are no exceptions.

**The Math Behind the Collapse**

If each participant recruits 5 people, the numbers grow like this: level 1 has 5 people, level 2 has 25, level 3 has 125, level 4 has 625, level 5 has 3,125. By level 13, you would need over 1.2 billion people. By level 15, you would exceed the world’s population.

Why pyramid schemes fail is not a matter of bad luck or poor execution. The model itself is broken. It depends on each new level being larger than the one before it, and at some point there are simply no more people to recruit.

When recruitment slows, the money stops flowing upward. The people at the bottom have paid in but cannot earn back their investment. The scheme collapses, and only the early entrants walk away with profits.

**Definition:** Pyramid schemes fail because they require exponential and infinite growth in recruitment, which is mathematically impossible. When new recruits run out, the payment structure collapses.

No amount of motivation, training, or “better timing” can fix this. The failure is built into the structure itself.
