In a pyramid scheme, only the small group at the top of the structure profits — typically the founders and the earliest recruits. Everyone below them loses money, with later joiners losing the most. Who profits in a pyramid scheme follows a strict mathematical pattern: those who entered first and recruited heavily take all the gains, while the majority pays the bill.

**How profits are distributed in a pyramid scheme**

*   **Founders and operators** — typically extract millions before the scheme collapses, often disappearing or rebranding when it does.
*   **Top 1% of recruits** — early members who recruited aggressively can earn hundreds of thousands or millions.
*   **Top 10%** — break even or earn small profits, often offset by training and tool expenses.
