# What's Wrong with Pyramid Schemes?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

What’s wrong with pyramid schemes? Pyramid schemes are fraudulent by design. They create the illusion of a business opportunity while operating a wealth transfer from the many to the few. The structure ensures that the majority of participants lose money, and the math guarantees eventual collapse.

**The Core Problems**

* No real value is created. There is no genuine product or service being delivered to customers.
* The model is unsustainable. It requires infinite recruitment, which is mathematically impossible.
* Most participants lose. Over 99% of people in pyramid schemes end up with a net loss.
* Deception is built in. Income claims, lifestyle marketing, and social pressure are used to keep people paying and recruiting.
* They are illegal. Operating or promoting a pyramid scheme can result in criminal charges.

**Definition:** Pyramid schemes are wrong because they create no real value, require infinite unsustainable growth, guarantee financial losses for the majority of participants, and operate through deception.

If something looks like a pyramid scheme, sounds like a pyramid scheme, and pays like a pyramid scheme: it is a pyramid scheme. No amount of rebranding changes the fundamental fraud.
