# What Makes Something a Pyramid Scheme?

**Updated:** May 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

What makes something a pyramid scheme is that participants earn primarily from recruitment of new members rather than from real sales of products or services to outside customers. The structure depends on exponential growth that cannot be sustained. What makes something a pyramid scheme is defined by where the money comes from, not by the company's name, marketing, or stated mission.

**Defining traits of a pyramid scheme**

* **Income from recruitment** — most earnings come from sign-up fees or required purchases by new members.
* **No genuine retail demand** — products don't sell at the offered price outside the network of participants.
* **Entry fee required** — joining costs $100-$10,000+, often labeled as a starter kit or training package.
* **Mandatory ongoing purchases** — members must keep buying product to maintain rank or qualify for commissions.
* **Exponential growth needed** — sustaining payouts requires recruitment to double or triple at each level.
* **Recruitment-focused training** — events and materials emphasize signing up new members, not actual product sales.
* **Hidden income data** — the company refuses to publish detailed income disclosures showing all rank levels.

**Definition:** Something becomes a pyramid scheme when its income structure depends primarily on recruiting new members rather than selling real products to outside customers. The FTC and other regulators look at where revenue actually comes from, not at how the company describes itself.

Brand name and shiny marketing don't change what something is. If the income flows from recruitment fees rather than real customer sales, the structure is a pyramid, regardless of how the pitch is worded.
