# What Is the MLM Business Model?

**Updated:** June 2026

The MLM business model is a direct selling structure where independent distributors earn commissions on both their personal sales and the sales generated by people they recruit into the company. Income flows from product movement, not from recruitment fees.

**Core components of the MLM business model**

* **Product or service** — physical goods, digital services, or memberships sold to end consumers.
* **Independent distributors** — self-employed sellers who buy at wholesale and sell at retail.
* **Compensation plan** — the rule set defining payouts on personal sales, downline sales, and rank advancement.
* **Recruitment system** — onboarding, training, and duplication tools to build new distributor teams.
* **Back office** — MLM software that tracks genealogy, calculates commissions, and processes payouts.

**Definition:** The MLM business model is a customer-acquisition system that uses independent distributors to sell products and recruit other distributors. Compensation comes from a percentage of sales at multiple levels of the network. Legitimate MLM businesses generate the majority of revenue from retail sales to non-distributors, distinguishing them from pyramid schemes.

A sustainable MLM business model balances product margin, distributor payout, and operational cost. Plans that pay more than 50% of revenue to distributors typically fail within three years.
