# What Is the Difference Between a Pyramid Scheme and Multi Level Marketing?

**Updated:** April 2026

What is the difference between a pyramid scheme and multi level marketing? The fundamental difference is the source of revenue. In a legitimate MLM company, income comes from selling real products to real customers. In a pyramid scheme, income comes primarily from recruitment fees paid by new participants.

**Side-by-Side Comparison**

In multi level marketing, the company produces a product with genuine market demand. Distributors earn commissions by selling those products. Recruitment helps build a sales team, but the money is generated by product sales volume, not by the act of recruiting.

In a pyramid scheme, the product either does not exist or is irrelevant to the income model. New recruits pay to join, and that money flows to the people above them. Without continuous recruitment, income stops.

Is a ponzi scheme a pyramid scheme? No, they are related but different. A Ponzi scheme pays returns to earlier investors using money from newer investors, creating the illusion of legitimate investment returns. A pyramid scheme pays participants for recruiting new members. Both are fraudulent, but they use different mechanisms.

**Definition:** The difference between a pyramid scheme and MLM is the revenue source. MLM earns from product sales to customers. Pyramid schemes earn from recruitment fees. Both have multi-level structures, but only MLM is legal.

When evaluating any opportunity, ask one question: does this business make money when no new people join? If the answer is yes, it is likely a legitimate MLM. If no, it is a pyramid scheme.
