# What is Network Marketing?

**Updated:** April 2026

What is network marketing? Network marketing is a business model where independent distributors sell products directly to consumers and earn commissions from their own sales and from the sales of people they recruit into their team. This model is also referred to as multi-level marketing (MLM) or direct selling. Instead of traditional retail, companies build a network of independent representatives who promote products, recruit new distributors, and grow a sales organization known as a "downline." The concept originated in the 1940s in the United States, and today network marketing generates over $180 billion in annual revenue worldwide.

**How Network Marketing Actually Works**

A company creates a product. Instead of selling through stores, it partners with independent distributors. Each distributor does two things: sells the product to end customers and recruits new distributors into the network.

Income in network marketing comes from two sources:

1. **Direct sales commissions** — a percentage of every product you personally sell
2. **Downline commissions** — a percentage of sales made by the people you recruited, and the people they recruited

The person who recruited you is your upline. Everyone you recruit is your downline. How commissions are split across levels depends on the company's compensation plan — the core document that defines how money flows through the network.

Network marketing is not the same as a pyramid scheme. In a legitimate network marketing business, revenue comes from selling real products to real customers. In a pyramid scheme, income depends on recruitment fees

* – and that is illegal in most countries.

**Definition:** Network marketing (also known as MLM) is a business model where independent distributors earn income from personal product sales. Also from commissions on sales made by their recruited team members, operating under a multi-level compensation plan.

Network marketing is a proven distribution model used by thousands of companies globally. It offers low entry costs, flexible work, and the potential to build residual income through team sales. The key factor that separates a legitimate MLM business from a scam is whether income is driven by real product sales or by recruitment fees. Before joining any network marketing company, research its compensation plan, product quality, and legal standing.
