What is multi level marketing? Multi level marketing (MLM) is a sales strategy where a company distributes its products through a network of independent representatives who earn commissions on their own sales and on the sales generated by their recruited team. MLM is a form of direct selling. Instead of hiring a traditional sales force, the company relies on individual distributors who build their own sales teams. Each distributor operates as an independent business owner: buying products at wholesale, selling at retail, and earning bonuses based on team performance.

**Structure of an MLM Business**

An MLM organization is built in levels. You join the company, start selling, and recruit others to do the same. Your recruits form your first level. When they recruit their own people, that becomes your second level, and so on.

The compensation plan defines how deep these levels go and what percentage you earn from each. Common MLM compensation plans include:

*   **Binary plan** — you build two teams (left and right leg) and earn based on the weaker leg's volume
*   **Unilevel plan** — unlimited first-level recruits, commissions paid across a fixed number of levels
