# What Is MLM Structure?

**Updated:** June 2026

By Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

MLM structure is the way distributors are organized in a multi-level marketing company's downline, defining how recruits attach to sponsors and how commissions flow through the network. Different structures produce different earning dynamics.

**Common MLM structures**

* **Binary structure** — every distributor has exactly two frontline positions.
* **Matrix structure** — fixed width × depth grid with spillover.
* **Unilevel structure** — unlimited frontline, fixed depth.
* **Board structure** — distributors fill positions on a board that cycles when complete.
* **Stair-step breakaway** — distributors break from their sponsor when reaching qualification, forming new generation lines.

**Definition:** MLM structure describes the network architecture of a multi-level marketing company, including how distributors are placed in relation to sponsors and how downlines extend in width and depth. Structure choice directly affects recruitment incentives, commission flow, software complexity, and the company's regulatory risk profile.

Choosing the right MLM structure at launch is critical — restructuring after distributors join causes immediate trust loss and high attrition. Most companies model multiple structures before deciding.
