# What Is Matrix Plan?

**Updated:** June 2026

By Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

A matrix plan is an MLM compensation structure with a fixed width and depth, where each distributor's downline is shaped as a grid (such as 3×9 or 5×7) and excess recruits spill into open positions below. Completing the grid triggers a cycle bonus.

**Core mechanics of a matrix plan**

* **Fixed grid dimensions** — written as width × depth; a 3×9 matrix has 3 frontline positions and 9 levels deep, holding 29,523 positions total.

* **Spillover placement** — once frontline is full, new recruits drop to the next open slot below the sponsor.

* **Level commissions** — flat or tiered percentages on every sale at each level inside the matrix.

* **Cycle bonus** — when the entire matrix fills, a lump-sum bonus is paid and the distributor often re-enters.

* **Compression rules** — inactive distributors are skipped so commissions still flow through to qualified members.

**Definition:** A matrix plan is a network marketing compensation structure that limits both width and depth of each downline. It rewards distributors when grid positions fill, uses spillover to support new recruits, and works best for affordable consumable products with monthly repurchase cycles. The fixed dimensions make maximum earnings calculable in advance.

Matrix plans are widely used by MLM companies targeting low-ticket consumable products. Plan success depends on real retail demand for the product, since cycle bonuses without retail backing attract FTC scrutiny.
