# What Is Binary MLM Compensation Plan?

**Updated:** June 2026

By Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

A binary MLM compensation plan pays distributors based on the sales volume generated in the weaker of their two downline legs. Each distributor builds exactly two frontline positions, and balanced growth maximizes earnings.

**Components of the binary MLM compensation plan**

* **Two legs only** — left and right; any additional sponsored distributor spills into one of the two existing legs.
* **Pay leg identification** — at cycle close, the system finds the leg with lower business volume; that becomes the pay leg.
* **Commission percentage** — typically 5% to 20% of the pay leg's volume, depending on rank.
* **Carryover volume** — most binary plans carry over excess volume from the strong leg to the next pay cycle.
* **Capping rules** — most binary plans cap weekly or monthly payouts to protect company margins.

**Definition:** A binary MLM compensation plan is a network marketing payout structure based on a two-leg downline where commissions are calculated on the sales volume in the lesser leg. It rewards distributors for sponsoring two strong builders and balancing their organization, and it is the dominant plan type in modern MLM launches because of its simplicity and fast payout cycles.

The binary plan's main strength is speed of commission turnover — many plans pay weekly, which keeps new distributors motivated and active.
