# What Is an MLM Scheme?

**Updated:** April 2026

What is an MLM scheme? An MLM scheme is a term used to describe a multi-level marketing structure — but the word "scheme" carries two very different meanings depending on context. In business, "scheme" can simply mean a plan or system. In everyday conversation, "scheme" implies deception or fraud. When people search for "what is an MLM scheme" or "what is MLM scheme," they usually want to know whether MLM as a business model is legitimate or a scam.

**MLM Scheme: Structure vs. Scam**

In its neutral meaning, an MLM scheme refers to the compensation structure and business plan that governs how a multi-level marketing company pays its distributors. Every MLM operates under a scheme — a defined set of rules for commissions, bonuses, rank advancement, and team payouts.

In its negative meaning, an MLM scheme refers to a company that uses the MLM structure to disguise what is essentially a pyramid scheme. Signs of a fraudulent MLM scheme:

* Commissions are based on recruitment, not product sales
* The product is overpriced or has no real market outside the distributor network
* Distributors are required to make large mandatory purchases
* Income claims are exaggerated and unrealistic
* The company discourages critical questions or independent research

The difference between a legitimate MLM and an MLM scheme (in the negative sense) is always the same: where does the money come from? Real product sales to real customers = legitimate. Recruitment fees and forced purchases = scam.

**Definition:** An MLM scheme refers either to the legitimate compensation structure of a multi-level marketing company or, in common usage, to a fraudulent operation that uses MLM structure to disguise a pyramid scheme.

Not every MLM is a scheme in the negative sense. But every MLM does operate under a scheme in the structural sense. The question is whether that structure is built on real product sales or on recruitment.
