# What Is an MLM Scam?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

What is an MLM scam? An MLM scam is a business that uses the multi-level marketing label to disguise what is actually a pyramid scheme or fraud. It typically features a product with little real value, exaggerated income claims, high mandatory purchases, and a compensation plan that rewards recruitment far more than actual product sales.

**How to Recognize an MLM Scam**

* The product is overpriced and has no real market demand outside the distributor network
* Income projections are unrealistic and not supported by the company’s income disclosure statement
* You are required to buy large amounts of inventory upfront or maintain minimum monthly purchases
* The focus of training and events is on recruiting, not on learning how to sell the product
* The company has faced regulatory action, lawsuits, or FTC investigations

Not every MLM is a scam. Thousands of legitimate multi-level marketing companies operate legally and ethically, with real products and fair compensation plans. The difference is in the details: how money flows, whether real customers exist, and whether the company is transparent about earnings.

**Definition:** An MLM scam is a fraudulent business disguised as a multi-level marketing opportunity, characterized by overpriced products, unrealistic income claims, and a compensation structure that depends primarily on recruitment rather than genuine product sales.

Always check a company’s income disclosure statement before joining. If fewer than 1% of participants earn a meaningful income, that tells you everything you need to know.
