What is a pyramid scheme? A pyramid scheme is a fraudulent business model where participants earn money primarily by recruiting new members rather than by selling legitimate products or services. Each new recruit pays a fee to join, and that money flows upward to the people who joined earlier. The structure resembles a pyramid because each level needs to recruit more people than the level above it.

**How a Pyramid Scheme Is Structured**

At the top sits the founder or a small group of early participants. They recruit a layer below them, who recruit another layer, and so on. The people at the top collect the majority of the money. As the pyramid grows, it becomes mathematically impossible to sustain — there simply aren’t enough new recruits to pay everyone. When recruitment stalls, the entire structure collapses and the people at the bottom lose their money.

Some pyramid schemes disguise themselves by attaching a product or service to the model, but the product is usually overpriced or has no real market demand. The actual revenue comes from recruitment fees, not from product sales.
