# What Is a Money Pyramid?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

What is a money pyramid? A money pyramid is another term for a pyramid scheme — a fraudulent structure where money flows from new participants at the bottom to existing participants at the top. Each new member pays to join, and that money is distributed upward through the levels. There is no real product or service being sold. The “money” in the name refers to the fact that the only thing moving through the structure is cash.

**How It Differs from Legitimate Business**

In a money pyramid, there is no product, no customer, and no value being created. It is purely a wealth transfer from later participants to earlier ones. This makes it illegal in virtually every country.

By contrast, a legitimate MLM or network marketing business involves real products being sold to real customers. Income comes from sales volume, not from payments made by new recruits.

**Definition:** A money pyramid is a fraudulent scheme where new participants’ fees are distributed to earlier participants with no real product or service involved. It is another name for a pyramid scheme and is illegal in most countries.

If someone presents a “money-making opportunity” that involves paying to join and recruiting others who pay, it is a money pyramid — and it is illegal.
