# What Is a Downline in MLM?

A downline in MLM is the group of distributors who joined the company through a chain of sponsorship starting from a given distributor. It includes personally sponsored recruits and everyone they sponsor down through the entire network.

**Structure and importance of a downline**

*   **Personal frontline** — distributors you personally enrolled into the company.
*   **Deeper levels** — everyone your frontline sponsors, and their recruits, and so on, all the way down.
*   **Commission source** — most MLM income comes from downline sales volume, not personal sales.
*   **Genealogy tracking** — MLM software displays your downline as a tree (binary, unilevel, or matrix shape).
*   **Volume aggregation** — your downline's total sales count toward rank advancement and bonus pool eligibility.

**Definition:** A downline in MLM is the entire network of distributors who joined the company under a given distributor's line of sponsorship, including direct recruits and all subsequent layers below them. The downline is the primary source of long-term commissions in multi-level marketing, and its size and depth determine a distributor's rank and earnings potential.

A strong downline is built on two or three solid personally sponsored leaders, not on hundreds of weak frontline recruits. Quality of sponsorship outweighs quantity in every MLM compensation plan.
