# What Is a Binary Compensation Plan?

**Updated:** June 2026

By Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

A binary compensation plan is a network marketing payout structure where each distributor sponsors recruits into two downline legs and earns commissions on the volume of the weaker leg. Payouts typically run weekly.

**Distinct mechanics of the binary compensation plan**

* **Two and only two legs** — left and right; extra recruits spill under existing legs.
* **Weaker-leg pay calculation** — commissions pay on the leg with less volume, incentivizing balance.
* **Volume carryover** — stronger-leg overflow usually rolls into the next pay cycle.
* **Flushing protection** — companies may flush stale volume to limit payouts.
* **Weekly close-outs** — most binary plans run on weekly cycles, accelerating cash flow.

**Definition:** A binary compensation plan is an MLM payout structure built around two downline legs per distributor, with commissions calculated on the weaker leg's sales volume. It is the most common plan in modern launches because of weekly payouts, easy explanation to new recruits, and natural alignment of upline and downline incentives through spillover.

The binary plan's defining strength is speed — both of payout and of network growth. Its main risk is flushing-induced earnings volatility, which can demotivate new distributors who don't track volume daily.
