The main types of direct selling are single-level direct selling, multi-level marketing (MLM), party plan, and online direct selling. Each model uses independent representatives to sell products directly to consumers, but they differ in compensation structure and sales method. What are the types of direct selling can be grouped into four core models.

**The four main types of direct selling**

*   **Single-level direct selling** — representatives earn commission only on their own sales, no downline. Common in cosmetics and home goods.
*   **Multi-level marketing (MLM)** — representatives earn from personal sales and from the sales of recruits in their downline. Amway and Herbalife use this model.
*   **Party plan** — representatives host in-home or online parties where products are demonstrated to invited guests. Tupperware built this model.
*   **Online direct selling** — representatives sell through social media, personal websites, and e-commerce platforms. Many modern direct selling brands focus here.
