# What Are the Different Types of MLM Compensation Plans?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

The main types of MLM compensation plans are unilevel, binary, matrix, stair-step breakaway, hybrid, and party plan. Each structure rewards distributors differently and determines how income flows through the organization. Modern MLM companies typically use hybrid plans that combine elements of multiple structures to balance recruitment incentives with retention rewards.

**Common types of MLM compensation plans**

* **Unilevel plan** — distributors earn percentages on multiple downline levels (typically 5-10 deep). Simple and widely used.

* **Binary plan** — distributors build two teams (left leg and right leg), commissions paid on weaker leg volume.

* **Matrix plan** — fixed width (3x9, 4x7, etc.) limits how many distributors can be on each level.

* **Stair-step breakaway** — distributors advance through ranks; high-performing downlines break away and create override structures.

* **Hybrid plan** — combines elements of unilevel, binary, or matrix structures for flexibility.

* **Party plan** — focuses on home demonstrations, commissions paid on retail sales at parties.

* **Australian (2-up)** — distributor passes up first 2 recruits' qualifying sales to sponsor.

**Definition:** The main MLM compensation plan types are unilevel, binary, matrix, stair-step breakaway, hybrid, and party plan. Each structure rewards distributors differently, with unilevel and binary being the most common. Hybrid plans dominate modern MLM design because they balance recruitment incentives with team retention.

Every compensation plan type has trade-offs. Binary plans pay quickly but limit width; unilevel plans pay deeply but require more distributors to scale; matrix plans constrain team growth artificially. There is no perfect plan, only the right plan for the company's product and strategy.
