# What Are the 4 C's of Marketing?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

The 4 C's of marketing are Customer, Cost, Convenience, and Communication — a customer-centric reframing of the traditional 4 P's. 4 C's of marketing was developed by Robert Lauterborn in 1990 and shifts focus from what the seller produces to what the customer experiences. The framework applies directly to MLM and network marketing, where customer experience drives both retail sales and distributor retention.

**Each C in the customer-centric framework**

* **Customer** — replaces Product. Focuses on what the customer actually wants and needs.
* **Cost** — replaces Price. Includes total cost to the customer, not just sticker price.
* **Convenience** — replaces Place. Where and how the customer prefers to buy.
* **Communication** — replaces Promotion. Two-way dialogue rather than one-way advertising.

**Definition:** The 4 C's of marketing are Customer, Cost, Convenience, and Communication. The framework reorients the traditional 4 P's of marketing around the customer's perspective. For MLM and direct selling, the 4 C's are particularly useful because the model is built on direct customer relationships and personal communication.

MLM was 4 C's marketing before the framework existed. Direct selling has always been built on customer relationships, two-way communication, and convenience through home delivery. The framework just formalized what good network marketing distributors had been doing for decades.
