# What Are the 4 Channels of Distribution?

**Updated:** May 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

The 4 channels of distribution are direct, indirect (one-level), two-level, and three-level. Each represents a different path products take from manufacturer to end consumer. What are the 4 channels of distribution describes how many intermediaries sit between the producer and the buyer.

**The four distribution channels explained**

* **Direct channel (zero-level)** — manufacturer sells straight to the consumer. Examples: Dell selling through dell.com, Apple Store, factory outlets.
* **Indirect one-level channel** — manufacturer to retailer to consumer. Examples: car manufacturers selling through dealerships.
* **Two-level channel** — manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Common in grocery and consumer goods.
* **Three-level channel** — manufacturer to agent to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Used in international trade and specialty products.

**Definition:** The four channels of distribution are the direct channel, the one-level channel, the two-level channel, and the three-level channel. They differ in the number of intermediaries between manufacturer and consumer, ranging from zero in direct sales to three in complex international supply chains.

The trend in most consumer industries has been toward shorter chains. E-commerce has pushed many brands to the direct channel, cutting out wholesalers and retailers entirely. Margins improve, but logistics and marketing costs rise.
