# What Are Pyramid Schemes?

**Updated:** May 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Pyramid schemes are illegal business models where participants pay to join, must recruit new members to earn income, and the entire structure depends on continuous exponential growth that inevitably fails. They are a form of consumer fraud banned in nearly every developed country. What are pyramid schemes in plain terms: rigged money-transfer systems disguised as business opportunities.

**Common types of pyramid schemes**

* **Classic recruitment pyramids** — pay-to-play schemes with no product, just sign-up fees flowing upward.
* **Product-based pyramids** — schemes using a product as cover, with income tied to distributor recruitment.
* **Investment pyramids** — promising returns funded entirely by new investor deposits.
* **Crypto and DeFi pyramids** — modern versions disguised as token launches, yield farms, or NFT clubs.
* **Gifting circles** — "blessing looms," "sou-sou" rebrands, where members pay each other in cycles.
* **Business opportunity scams** — "automation," "AI businesses," travel club memberships, etc.
* **Educational pyramids** — paid courses where the real income comes from recruiting new students.

**Definition:** Pyramid schemes are illegal recruitment-based business models that collapse when new sign-ups slow. They take many forms — classic recruitment pyramids, product-cover MLMs, investment frauds, crypto schemes, gifting circles, and business opportunity scams — but all share the same structural design.

Pyramid schemes mutate with every new technology, but the underlying mechanic is always the same. Recruit, pay, hope new recruits arrive before collapse. Recognize the pattern and you can spot it in any era.
