# Is Network Marketing the Same as a Pyramid Scheme?

**Updated:** April 2026

Is network marketing the same as a pyramid scheme? No. Network marketing and pyramid schemes are fundamentally different business models, even though they both involve recruitment and a multi-level structure. The critical difference is the source of revenue.

**The Distinction**

In network marketing, income comes from selling real products to real customers. The product has genuine market value, and distributors earn commissions based on sales volume. Recruitment is part of the model, but it is not the revenue driver.

In a pyramid scheme, income comes from fees paid by new recruits. The product is either nonexistent or exists only as a cover for the recruitment model. Without new recruits, the scheme collapses.

This distinction is recognized by the FTC, courts, and consumer protection agencies worldwide. Network marketing is legal. Pyramid schemes are illegal.

**Definition:** Network marketing is not the same as a pyramid scheme. Network marketing generates revenue from product sales to customers. Pyramid schemes generate revenue from recruitment fees. The legal status, structure, and outcomes are fundamentally different.

If you are evaluating an opportunity, ask one question: does this business earn money from selling products, or from signing up new members? The answer tells you which model it is.
