Is network marketing a pyramid scheme? No. Network marketing is a legitimate business model when the company sells real products to real customers and pays commissions based on sales volume. A pyramid scheme is an illegal fraud where participants pay to join and income comes primarily from recruiting new members, not from product sales. The confusion exists because both models involve recruitment and a multi-level structure. But the core difference is where the money actually comes from.

**How to Tell the Difference**

A legitimate network marketing company focuses on moving products to end consumers. Distributors earn commissions when products are sold. Recruitment helps build the team, but income is tied to actual sales volume.

A pyramid scheme works differently. New participants pay an entry fee or are forced to buy overpriced inventory. The money from new recruits flows up to the people at the top. When recruitment slows, the whole structure collapses.

Red flags that suggest a pyramid scheme:

*   Heavy emphasis on recruitment over product sales
*   High mandatory upfront investment or inventory purchases
*   No real product, or a product with no genuine market demand
