# Is MLM a Pyramid Scheme?

Is MLM a pyramid scheme? Not inherently. Multi-level marketing is a legal business model that is distinct from a pyramid scheme. The critical difference is the source of revenue. In legitimate MLM, income comes from selling real products to real customers. In a pyramid scheme, income comes from recruitment fees paid by new participants.

**When MLM Crosses the Line**

An MLM company becomes a pyramid scheme when it meets certain criteria: most income comes from recruitment rather than product sales, the product has no real market demand, distributors are required to make excessive purchases. Add to it that the compensation plan is structured so that only the top few percent can realistically earn money.

Regulators like the FTC evaluate MLM companies on a case-by-case basis. Some companies that call themselves MLM have been shut down as pyramid schemes. Others operate legally for decades.

**Definition:** MLM is not automatically a pyramid scheme. It becomes one when the primary revenue source is recruitment fees rather than genuine product sales to end consumers.

Before joining any MLM, ask: does this company make money from selling products, or from signing up new distributors? The answer tells you everything.
