# Is a Business Plan an Incentive or a Limitation?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

A business plan functions as both an incentive and a limitation, depending on how it is used. It is an incentive when it provides clear targets, milestones, and rewards that motivate action. It becomes a limitation when it locks the business into rigid assumptions that no longer match reality. In MLM, the compensation plan acts as the operational business plan and works the same way for distributors.

**How business plans incentivize vs. limit in MLM**

* **Incentive function** — clear rank advancement criteria motivate distributors to hit defined targets.

* **Limitation function** — fixed qualification rules can prevent legitimate activity that doesn't fit the plan's categories.

* **Predictable rewards** — well-designed compensation plans give distributors confidence in the payout for their effort.

* **Rigid rule constraints** — overly complex plans confuse distributors and reduce activity.

* **Adaptability matters** — top MLMs review the compensation plan every 2-3 years to keep it aligned with market conditions.

* **Strategic boundaries** — a good plan filters out the wrong activities while encouraging the right ones.

**Definition:** A business plan can function as either an incentive or a limitation. When it provides clear targets and rewards, it incentivizes action. When it locks in outdated assumptions, it limits adaptability. In MLM, the compensation plan serves the same dual role for distributors and requires periodic review to stay effective.

MLM compensation plans that haven't been updated in 10+ years almost always limit growth more than they incentivize it. Markets change, distributor preferences shift, and the plan needs to evolve with them.
