How to tell if it's a multi level marketing company? The easiest way to tell if a company is an MLM is to check whether its participants earn commissions not only from their own sales but also from the sales made by people they recruit. If the compensation plan pays across multiple levels of a distributor organization — it is a multi level marketing company. Many companies avoid the "MLM" label and use terms like "social selling," "affiliate program," "direct sales," or "referral business," but the structure reveals the truth.

**Signs It's an MLM**

* **Multi-level commissions.** You earn from your own sales AND from the sales of people you recruit, and the people they recruit. This is the defining feature.
* **Ranks and advancement.** There is a rank structure (like Silver, Gold, Diamond, Director) that you achieve through personal and team sales volume.
* **Team building emphasis.** The company encourages you to recruit other sellers and build a "team" or "organization."
* **Starter kit required.** You purchase a product package or starter kit to join. Not all companies with starter kits are MLMs, but it is a common feature.
* **Monthly purchase requirements.** You must maintain a minimum monthly order to stay "active" and eligible for commissions.
* **Compensation plan complexity.** The compensation plan is a multi-page document with terms like "downline," "upline," "override commissions," "leadership bonus," and "volume."

If a company has these features, it is an MLM — regardless of what it calls itself.

**Definition:** You can tell if a company is an MLM by checking whether its compensation plan pays commissions across multiple levels of recruited distributors, uses a rank structure, and emphasizes team building alongside product sales.

How to tell if its a multi level marketing company? Look at the comp plan. If it pays on multiple levels and emphasizes recruitment — it is an MLM. The label the company uses does not matter. The structure does.
