# How to Structure a Bonus Program?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

To structure a bonus program, define the goals, choose the bonus types, set qualification criteria, integrate with payroll or MLM software, document the rules, and communicate broadly. A well-structured bonus program drives the behavior the company wants to grow, whether that is customer acquisition, retention, team building, or rank advancement.

**Components of an MLM bonus program structure**

* **Program goals** — specific behaviors the program drives: retail sales, recruitment, team retention, leadership development.

* **Bonus types included** — retail commission, fast start, matching, leadership, rank advancement, infinity, generation, pool.

* **Qualification criteria** — minimum PV, active status, rank requirements, customer counts.

* **Payout formulas** — percentage of volume, fixed amounts, tiered thresholds.

* **Timing** — weekly fast start bonuses, monthly team bonuses, annual recognition awards.

* **Software configuration** — MLM software programmed to calculate and pay each bonus type.

* **Communication plan** — written documentation, training videos, replicated site dashboards.

* **Review and adjustment** — quarterly performance reviews, annual major adjustments if needed.

**Definition:** A bonus program structure defines goals, bonus types, qualification criteria, payout formulas, timing, software configuration, communication, and ongoing review. In MLM, the program is the operational expression of the compensation plan and determines how distributors actually experience the income opportunity day to day.

MLM companies often build elaborate bonus programs without testing whether distributors actually understand them. Distributor comprehension testing should happen before the program launches, not after complaints arrive.
