# How to Structure a Bonus Plan?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

To structure a bonus plan, define the goal, choose the bonus type, set clear performance metrics, decide the payout formula, and document everything in writing. In MLM and direct selling, bonus plan structure is at the heart of the compensation plan and directly affects distributor behavior, retention, and revenue.

**Steps to structure a bonus plan in MLM**

* **Set the goal** — what behavior the bonus rewards: personal sales, team building, customer retention, rank advancement.

* **Pick the bonus type** — retail commission, fast start bonus, matching bonus, leadership bonus, rank advancement bonus, infinity bonus.

* **Define performance metrics** — personal volume (PV), group volume (GV), customer count, active months.

* **Choose the payout formula** — fixed amount, percentage of volume, tiered thresholds, or hybrid.

* **Set qualification criteria** — minimum PV, active status, rank requirements.

* **Test the math** — model the plan against 10,000 distributor scenarios to confirm payout ratios stay under 50%.

* **Document and communicate** — clear written rules, distributor training materials, replicated website displays.

**Definition:** Structuring a bonus plan requires defining the goal, selecting the bonus type, setting performance metrics, designing the payout formula, and modeling the math against realistic scenarios. In MLM, the bonus plan structure is the engine that drives distributor behavior and determines whether the company can sustainably pay its compensation plan.

Most failed MLM compensation plans share one root cause: they were designed by lawyers and accountants without input from working distributors. A bonus plan that rewards the wrong behaviors creates the wrong company.
