How to identify a pyramid scheme? The most reliable method is to follow the money. If a business earns most of its revenue from fees paid by new participants rather than from selling products to actual customers, it is a pyramid scheme. Everything else — the product, the presentations, the testimonials — is window dressing.

**Identification Checklist**

*   Check where revenue comes from. Real product sales to non-participants = legitimate. Fees from new recruits = pyramid scheme.
*   Look at the income disclosure statement. If fewer than 1% of participants earn more than they spend, that is a major red flag.
*   Evaluate the product independently. Could you sell this product at this price without the business opportunity attached? If no, the product exists only to justify the recruitment model.
*   Watch the recruitment pressure. Legitimate businesses focus on selling. Pyramid schemes focus on “getting in early.”
*   Search for regulatory actions. Has the FTC, SEC, or any consumer protection agency investigated or fined this company?
