How MLM companies make money is straightforward: they capture the margin between product wholesale cost and the price paid by representatives, then pay out a portion of that margin as commissions across the network.

**Revenue sources for an MLM company**

*   **Product sales to distributors** — most MLM revenue comes from products sold to representatives, who may or may not resell to end customers.
*   **Sales to retail customers** — products sold through reps to external buyers.
*   **Starter kits** — initial purchase required to join, ranging from $25 to $500+.
*   **Monthly auto-ship** — many MLMs require ongoing personal purchases to remain active.
*   **Training and conferences** — annual events that can cost reps $300-$2,000 to attend.
*   **Tools and education** — books, audios, websites, and software sold to reps separately.
*   **Branded merchandise** — apparel and accessories sold at marked-up prices.
