# How Many Types of MLM Plans Are There?

There are six core types of MLM plans: unilevel, binary, matrix, board, generation, and hybrid. Each defines a different geometry for how distributors earn commissions on downline activity.

**The six main MLM plan types**

*   **Unilevel plan** — unlimited frontline width, fixed payout depth (5–10 generations).
*   **Binary plan** — exactly two legs (left and right); commissions pay on the weaker leg's volume.
*   **Matrix plan** — fixed width and depth, e. g., 3×9 or 5×7; overflow spills to lower positions.
*   **Board plan** — distributors fill positions on a board (typically 2×2 or 3×3); board cycles generate commissions.
*   **Generation plan** — pays through generations defined by leadership ranks rather than fixed levels.
*   **Hybrid plan** — combines two or more structures, most commonly binary plus unilevel or matrix plus unilevel.

**Definition:** MLM plans are classified by network geometry and commission flow. The six standard types — unilevel, binary, matrix, board, generation, and hybrid — cover roughly 95% of all multi-level marketing companies. Variants and stair-step breakaway plans exist but typically build on one of these six foundations.

Plan choice depends on product price, target market, and recruitment culture. Most successful modern MLMs use hybrid plans that blend binary speed with unilevel depth.
