There are six core types of MLM: unilevel, binary, matrix, board, generation, and hybrid. Together they describe almost every multi-level marketing company operating today.

**Quick guide to the six MLM types**

*   **Unilevel** — single-line frontline, fixed depth payout.
*   **Binary** — two legs, weaker-leg payout, weekly cycles.
*   **Matrix** — fixed width × depth grid, spillover-driven.
*   **Board** — fixed positions per board, cycle commissions when full.
*   **Generation/Stair-step breakaway** — pays on leadership generations rather than fixed levels.
*   **Hybrid** — combines two or more plan types, typically binary plus matrix or binary plus unilevel.

**Definition:** MLM types describe the network geometry and commission flow used by multi-level marketing companies. Most active MLMs use one of six core types or a hybrid combination of two. Choice of type affects recruitment dynamics, retention, distributor income volatility, and regulatory risk.
