# How Many Types of Direct Selling Are There?

There are three main types of direct selling: single-level direct sales, multi-level marketing (MLM), and party plan. Each uses independent distributors but pays them differently based on personal sales, downline sales, or hosted events.

**The three types of direct selling explained**

*   **Single-level direct sales** — distributors earn only on their personal retail sales; no downline commissions. Common for vacuum cleaners, knives, and cookware.
*   **Multi-level marketing (MLM)** — distributors earn on personal sales and on the sales of distributors they recruit; common for nutrition, cosmetics, wellness.
*   **Party plan** — distributors host in-home or virtual events where attendees buy products; can be single-level or MLM. Pampered Chef and Tupperware popularized this model.
*   **Sub-category — online direct selling** — distributors sell entirely through digital channels; can fit any of the three primary types.
*   **Sub-category — referral-only direct selling** — distributors earn referral fees but don't take inventory; common in financial services.

**Definition:** Direct selling types describe how products move from company to consumer through independent distributors and how those distributors are compensated. The three primary types — single-level, MLM, and party plan — cover virtually all direct selling globally, while subcategories like online and referral-only describe execution channels rather than fundamentally different structures.

Most regulated direct selling markets distinguish between single-level direct sales and multi-level marketing for tax and compliance purposes. Distributors should know which type applies to their company.
