# How Does Corporate Bonuses Work?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Corporate bonuses work by paying employees extra compensation when individual, team, or company performance targets are met. In a traditional corporation, bonuses are usually annual and represent 5-30% of base salary. The MLM industry uses a different structure where distributor bonuses are the primary income source rather than a supplement to base salary.

**How corporate vs. MLM bonuses compare**

* **Corporate bonus timing** — typically annual, paid in Q1 of the following year.

* **Corporate bonus size** — 5-30% of base salary for most employees, higher for executives.

* **Corporate bonus criteria** — individual performance, team results, company financial performance.

* **MLM bonus timing** — weekly or monthly, paid throughout the year.

* **MLM bonus role** — primary income, not supplemental to salary.

* **MLM bonus types** — retail commission, fast start, matching, leadership, rank advancement.

* **Income variability** — corporate bonuses are relatively predictable; MLM bonuses fluctuate monthly.

* **Tax treatment** — both are taxable income, but MLM bonuses are reported on 1099-NEC for independent contractors.

**Definition:** Corporate bonuses work by paying employees additional compensation when performance targets are met, typically 5-30% of base salary paid annually. MLM bonuses work differently, serving as the primary income source for distributors and paid weekly or monthly through the compensation plan based on sales and team activity.

Comparing corporate and MLM bonuses head to head is not really fair. They serve different purposes: one supplements salary, the other replaces it. The risk profiles are also different.
