# How Does a Unilevel Compensation Plan Work?

**Updated:** June 2026

By Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

A unilevel compensation plan works by placing every personally sponsored distributor on a distributor's first level and paying commissions on sales through a fixed number of generations below. There is no width limit on the frontline.

**Unilevel plan mechanics**

* **Level 1 = personally sponsored** — every direct recruit sits on your level 1; you can sponsor unlimited people there.
* **Level 2 = their direct recruits** — and so on down through the plan's payout depth (usually 5–10 levels).
* **Percentage per level** — each level pays a different percentage, typically declining with depth.
* **Personal volume requirement** — distributors must hit a monthly PV to receive any level commissions.
* **Compression** — inactive distributors are skipped so qualified distributors still receive their level commissions.

**Definition:** A unilevel compensation plan works by treating every personally sponsored distributor as a level-1 frontline and paying percentages on sales generated through a fixed depth of generations below. It is the most predictable MLM plan because earnings scale linearly with frontline width and team productivity, not with leg balance or matrix completion cycles.

Unilevel plans pay slower than binary plans but produce more stable monthly income for established distributors because there's no flushing and no weak-leg risk.
