# How Does a Pyramid Scheme Work?

How does a pyramid scheme work? A pyramid scheme works by collecting money from new recruits and distributing it to earlier participants. Each person who joins pays an entry fee or buys a mandatory package. A portion of that payment goes to the person who recruited them, and a portion goes further up the chain. How pyramid schemes work is simple math: each level must recruit significantly more people than the level above to keep the money flowing.

**The Mechanics**

* A founder starts the scheme and recruits the first group of participants, each of whom pays a fee to join.
* Those first participants recruit more people, collecting part of their fees and passing the rest upward.
* Each new layer of recruits does the same, creating an expanding pyramid structure.
* The people at the top accumulate significant money because they collect a share from every level below them.
* Eventually, the pool of potential recruits runs out. The lowest levels cannot find new members, and the scheme collapses.

How a pyramid scheme works in practice often involves high-pressure meetings, emotional manipulation, and exaggerated income claims. Participants are told to “invest in themselves” or “trust the system.” The reality is that by the time most people join, the math is already working against them.

**Definition:** A pyramid scheme works by requiring new participants to pay fees that are redistributed to earlier participants, creating a structure that depends on endless recruitment and inevitably collapses when new recruits can no longer be found.

The fundamental flaw is that pyramid schemes require exponential growth. If each person recruits just 5 people, by the 13th level you would need more people than the entire world population. That is why every pyramid scheme is guaranteed to fail.
