Pyramid schemes work by collecting fees from new members and using that money to pay earlier members, creating an illusion of income from a structure that produces no real value. How do pyramid schemes work in practice always follows the same pattern: pay to join, recruit others, hope new recruits arrive faster than the structure can collapse.

**How a pyramid scheme operates step by step**

*   **Entry fee or required purchase** — new members pay $100 to $10,000+ to join, often called an investment, starter pack, or training fee.
*   **Payouts to upline members** — a percentage of each entry fee flows up to the people who recruited them and those above.
*   **Aggressive recruitment requirement** — members are pushed to bring in more recruits, often with a quota.
*   **Income only with recruitment** — members who don't recruit cannot earn back what they paid.
*   **Exponential growth needed** — sustained payouts require recruitment doubling at every level, which is impossible past a few cycles.
*   **Collapse phase** — when growth slows, the structure cannot pay newer members, who lose their fees.
*   **Top operators disappear** — original organizers often shut down operations or rebrand once losses become public.
