MLM compensation plans work by paying distributors a percentage of sales generated by themselves and the distributors below them in the network. Payouts trigger on personal volume, group volume, and rank advancement events.

**How MLM compensation plans calculate payouts**

*   **Personal volume (PV)** — your own monthly purchases and retail sales count toward PV; most plans require minimum PV for commission eligibility.
*   **Group volume (GV)** — total sales of your entire downline; the basis for most level commissions.
*   **Commission percentages** — applied by level (unilevel), by leg (binary), by matrix position, or by generation.
*   **Rank qualification** — higher ranks unlock additional commission levels, bonuses, and pool participation.
*   **Pay cycle frequency** — weekly (binary), monthly (unilevel), or per-cycle (matrix and board).

**Definition:** MLM compensation plans work as multi-trigger payout systems that release commissions when distributors generate personal sales, when their downlines generate sales, and when distributors advance in rank. The plan specifies the math, frequency, and conditions for each trigger, and back-office software automates all calculations.
