The process is a closed loop that produces data on every send. How direct marketing works depends on having three things: a contact list, a clear offer, and a way to measure the result.

**The direct marketing process step by step**

*   **Step 1: Build the list** — collect contacts through sign-ups, purchases, lead magnets, or third-party data.
*   **Step 2: Segment the audience** — group contacts by behavior, demographics, or purchase history.
*   **Step 3: Craft the message** — write copy that addresses the segment's specific need or interest.
*   **Step 4: Choose the channel** — email, mail, SMS, phone, or social media, based on where the segment responds best.
*   **Step 5: Send and track** — deliver the campaign and record opens, clicks, calls, or purchases.
*   **Step 6: Analyze and refine** — compare results to past campaigns and adjust the next send.
