# How Big Should a Bonus Be?

**Updated:** June 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

A bonus should be large enough to feel meaningful to the recipient but small enough to remain sustainable for the business. In corporate settings, this usually means 5-25% of base salary. In MLM, total compensation plan payout across all bonus types typically stays at 35-50% of commissionable volume to keep the company financially viable.

**Bonus sizing guidelines in MLM**

* **Retail commission tier** — 20-40% of retail price as distributor margin.

* **Fast start bonus** — typically $25-$200 per new qualifying recruit.

* **Team building bonuses** — 5-15% of downline volume, often 5-10 levels deep.

* **Matching bonus** — typically 10-50% match of personally sponsored distributors' bonuses.

* **Rank advancement bonus** — $500-$50,000+ depending on rank achieved.

* **Total compensation plan payout** — sustainable plans pay out 35-50% of commissionable volume in total.

* **Top earner ratio** — top 1% of distributors typically earn 50-70% of total compensation plan payouts.

**Definition:** A bonus should be large enough to motivate but small enough to remain sustainable. In MLM, individual bonus sizes range from $25 fast starts to six-figure rank advancement awards, with total compensation plan payout typically staying within 35-50% of commissionable volume to maintain company viability.

Compensation plans that pay out more than 55% of commissionable volume nearly always collapse within 3-5 years. The math doesn't leave enough margin to cover product costs, operations, and corporate profit.
