# Do Pyramid Schemes Work?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Do pyramid schemes work? They work for a very small number of people at the top — and fail for everyone else. Studies consistently show that over 99% of participants in pyramid schemes lose money. The structure is mathematically designed to benefit early entrants at the expense of later ones.

**Why They Always Collapse**

Pyramid schemes require each participant to recruit multiple new members. If each person recruits just 5 people, the numbers explode rapidly: 5, 25, 125, 625, 3125, and so on. Within a few levels, you need more participants than exist in your city, country, or even on the planet.

Do pyramid schemes ever work long-term? No. Every pyramid scheme eventually runs out of recruits. When that happens, the money stops flowing, and the bottom levels — which hold the vast majority of participants — are left with nothing.

Some schemes last months. Some last years. But the outcome is always the same: collapse.

**Definition:** Pyramid schemes do not work for the vast majority of participants. They are mathematically guaranteed to collapse because they depend on infinite recruitment, which is impossible.

If someone tells you their pyramid scheme is “different” or “the timing is right,” the math has not changed. The structure ensures that most people will lose.
