**When MLM distributors need a license**

*   **Below the threshold** — most jurisdictions allow casual side income under $400–$1,000/year without formal registration.
*   **Sales tax obligations** — some states require sales tax permits if distributors collect tax on retail sales (often handled by the MLM company).
*   **Home occupation permits** — some cities require these for any home-based business activity.
*   **Professional services overlap** — financial services MLMs (insurance, securities) require licensing in the underlying field.
*   **LLC for protection** — once monthly income exceeds $1,000, forming an LLC separates personal assets from business risk.
